The state of the world’s human rights in 2023

According to the report of the World Justice Project (WJP) in 2023, the global human rights situation is concerning. This report indicates a continued reduction of the rule of law in the majority of countries affecting over 6 billion people worldwide.

In fact, since 2016 when authoritarian trends started a global rule of law recession 78% of countries have experienced this diminution. The most significant decline has been detected in the Fundamental Rights which has deteriorated in 77% of countries.

On the other hand, the rule of law has weakened in most of the countries between 2022 and 2023. Also, there is an increasing struggle in many countries to provide accessible, affordable and timely justice. The Civil Justice factor has been the most decline this year.

This report highlights important falls in civic participation freedom of assembly and association freedom of opinion and expression and freedom of religion since 2016.

This report proposes that most countries are falling short of upholding the promises enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). so, this information shows the need for a paradigm shift towards a people-centered approach in justice systems to reverse the current trends.

The WJP Rule of Law Index 2023 provides a comprehensive and startling overview of the state of human rights and the rule of law in the world. It emphasizes the urgent need to concerted efforts to address the diminution in fundamental rights and the weakening of justice systems. This report serves as a call to action for governments civil society and international organizations to prioritize the strengthening of the rule of law and the protection of human rights.
